- Use the “Remove Background” feature/prompt.
- Carefully inspect edges—especially around hair, shadows, or fine details.
- Manually refine any rough areas using erase/restore brushes if needed.
- Export as a PNG with a transparent background.
Pro tip: Zoom in and audit edges closely. Any haloing or leftover pixels will show up in the final transfer.

Step 2: Upscale the Image to 300 DPI (Enhance Print Quality)

DTF printing requires high-resolution artwork to maintain clarity and avoid pixelation. If your image is low resolution, scaling it improperly will degrade quality—this is where AI upscaling becomes essential.
We recommend using ImgUpscaler to enhance resolution without sacrificing detail.
Execution workflow:
- Upload your PNG file.
- Select 200% or 400% upscale depending on the original size.
- Download the enhanced image.
- Confirm the file now meets or exceeds 300 DPI at your intended print size.

Step 3: Crop and Remove Transparent Pixels (Optimize Print Area)

Excess transparent space can disrupt alignment, waste film, and complicate gang sheet layouts. Tight, intentional cropping ensures your design prints exactly as expected.

Execution workflow:
- Open your upscaled image in Photopea.
- Navigate to Image → Trim.
- Select Transparent Pixels and apply.
- This automatically removes all empty space around your design.
- Use the Crop Tool for any additional manual adjustments if needed.
- Export your final file as a PNG.

Once you’ve trimmed excess space, there’s an additional optimization layer that separates average results from production-grade output: eliminating semi-transparent pixels and tightening edge definition. These faint pixels often occur during background removal and can create unwanted halos or faded edges when printed.
To address this, you’ll implement a layer mask + threshold refinement workflow inside Photopea.
Advanced Execution Workflow:
- Open your design in Photopea.
- At the top of the Menu → Layer → Raster Mask → From Transparency.
- This allows you to control visibility without permanently deleting pixels.
Apply Threshold Adjustment
- With the mask selected (not the image), go to:
- Image → Adjustments → Threshold
- The threshold slider converts soft transparency into solid black or white.
Fine-Tune the Threshold Slider
- 128 is a good start. Adjust the slider to your preference.
- Drag the slider gradually to find the optimal balance:
- Lower values: preserve more detail but may leave faint edges.
- Higher values: create sharper edges but risk cutting into the design.
Re-Trim Transparent Pixels
- After adjustments, go back to:
- Image → Trim → Transparent Pixels
- This ensures your newly cleaned edges are tightly cropped.
